Dental Root Surgery Specialist

The word “surgery” can be scary. But dental surgery typically involves small, minimally invasive procedures. Most — if not all — dental surgeries are considered outpatient procedures that people recover from in a couple of days. Dental surgeries are performed to solve problems that may be caused by tooth loss, facial injury, infection or gum disease, or pain in the jaw or mouth.

At Greater Endodontics, the goal is first and foremost to save your natural teeth. If tooth removal is necessary, Greater Endodontics will make sure you end up with pleasing cosmetic results to save your smile.

Greater Endodontics utilizes safe sedation and superior endodontic technology, such as dental-specific surgical lasers, to make procedures quicker, more comfortable and more precise. Greater Endodontics dental root surgery specialists perform a wide variety of dental procedures including root canals, dental implants and tooth restoration. Greater Endodontics even offers 24/7 emergency services for people who suffer dental or facial damage after an accident.

Getting To The “Root” Of The Problem

Teeth have no immune system or blood supply, so when a tooth dies there are no white blood cells to fight infection. This leaves the area around the tooth vulnerable. Infected teeth are typically treated with root canal treatment.

Greater Endodontics uses advanced laser dentistry to precisely remove and reshape affected soft tissue during a root canal that would not be possible using conventional instruments. Laser beams light up and help to sterilize the infected areas that your body’s defense mechanisms can’t reach.

The risk for complications are reduced as the laser is able to pinpoint and destroy harmful bacteria and infection, while eliminating the risk of damaging the healthy tooth. This level of precision also reduces trauma to overall tooth and gum structure with targeted dental repair.

Laser therapy results in accelerated healing by reducing inflammation, minimizing trauma to surrounding teeth and tissue, activating the immune system and stimulating tissue regeneration. The healing process is less painful as laser treatments are less invasive and reduce the need for outdated dental tools and techniques.

Sometimes root canals are not successful. Often, a second root canal, known as root canal retreatment, is performed to completely remove any lingering infection. If an infection is significant and/or has spread to the root tip (or apex), an apicoectomy is performed.

What Is An Apicoectomy?

While an apicoectomy is slightly more invasive than a root canal procedure, it is a common procedure performed by the specialists at Greater Endodontics. Because of our highly trained dental root surgery specialists who use safe sedation therapies, patients are guaranteed to have a painless, worry-free experience.

An apicoectomy is also known as a root end resection. It involves removing the apex of the tooth. During the procedure, the apicoectomy specialist opens gum tissue near the infected tooth to reveal underlying bone and tissue. The apex of the tooth is removed as well as any infection in the surrounding tissue and bone.

After infection is removed, a filling is used to seal the end of the root canal and the area is stitched closed. This routine microsurgery is performed quickly and has minimal recovery time.

Dental Procedure Breakdown

Most dental surgery takes an hour or less — although more complicated procedures may take up to an hour and a half or two hours. Recovery time, especially with the advanced laser technology used by Greater Endodontics, is relatively quick and patients can expect to return to normal activities the day following their procedure.

Procedures Performed By Our Dental Root Surgery Specialists:
  • Root Canal — a root canal eliminates bacteria and infection by removing the inflamed or infected pulp. The inside of the tooth is then carefully cleaned and disinfected, then filled and sealed. As mentioned above, an apicoectomy is performed if the root canal infection has spread to the root tip, or apex.
  • Dental Implant — in case a tooth cannot be saved, dental implants can be used to replace a single missing tooth, increase the retention of dentures, and more. Dental implants require a surgical procedure that fuses bone to a dental prosthesis. This procedure involves drilling and has a longer recovery time than other procedures.
  • Post-Accident Dental Trauma — car accidents or other accidents that involve a severe blow to the jaw or face may result in a chipped or dislodged tooth, an avulsed (knocked out) tooth, or a root fracture. Endodontic treatment can help save teeth that have been affected in an accident.
