Aftercare - Root Canal Treatment
If you experience difficulty breathing at any time, contact EMS (911).
PAIN/INFLAMMATION
You may experience tenderness in your jaw or limited opening, from the local anesthetic. It is relatively normal for your tooth to be sore to the touch or bite following treatment. As a general rule - the more pain you had prior to treatment, the more likely you"ll have greater pain following treatment. It takes you body time to remove the inflammation. As your body begins to heal, it is normal to feel tenderness in the area over the next few weeks to months. As long as the trend is better week-by-week, please be patient.
Contact our office if you experience any of the following: visual swelling. allergic reactions, rashes, hives or itching.
REMEDIES FOR PAIN
Take 800 mg Ibuprofen (4 Advil every 6-8 hours for 72 hours, even when there is no pain) as this will help expedite the healing process. Do not exceed 3200 mg in a 24 hour period! As needed, take 1000 mg 121 Tylenol at the same time as the Ibuprofen. (Tylenol is known to be a faster acting pain reliever, however it does not reduce swelling.) Do not exceed 400 mg in a 24 hour period! When prescription drugs such as 4000 Norco or Percocet are recommended, they are to be used in place of Tylenol. Take both with food. Follow the advised precautions from the pharmacy insert.
HYGIENE CARE
Continue to brush and floss, but be careful not to disrupt the temporary filling.
Temporary Filling
FOLLOW UP
Congratulations on deciding to save your tooth. We hope it lasts a lifetime! The root canal procedure you had performed is the first step in returning your tooth to full form and function.
Please appoint to see your general dentist within the next few weeks, even if the tooth feels a little sore.
TEMPORARY FILLING
As a courtesy, we have provided you with a temporary filling at no charge. It is normal to feel rough, or "dished out" surfaces on a temporary filling. If you believe your temporary is biting "high" or has fallen completely out, please return to our office.
Use caution while eating or clenching your teeth, especially while laking pain meds. You may generate excessive forces that only a properly crowned tooth can handle.
