Reasons For Dental Restoration

There are plenty of reasons to receive dental restoration, whether due to injury, dental procedures or even years of bad hygiene. Whatever the case, you should consult a dental restoration specialist that can better assess your situation. This professional can lay out a plan for your dental restoration to get your smile looking better and brighter.

Common Reasons for Dental Restoration:

People often think of a chipped tooth as a lost cause. They may think that the only way to fix it is by replacing the tooth entirely. This is not the case. dental restoration specialist at Greater Endodontics are seasoned professionals that can handle any chipped tooth, which can be usually repaired with a simple filling and cap. However, a fracture often extends to the roots, exposing the pulp of the tooth. A root canal treatment is usually required to save and restore function to the tooth.

A tooth becomes dislodged from being pushed sideways out of or into its socket. In order to save the tooth, endodontic treatment is necessary to re-position and stabilize the tooth. If the pulp of the tooth has been damaged a root canal must be started in addition to medication followed by a permanent root canal filling or crown placed at a later date.

If a tooth is completely knocked out of your mouth it is essential to contact a dental restoration specialist immediately. Your tooth can be saved, so long as you follow critical steps and receive treatment. If your tooth has been knocked out and you can save it, pick it up by the biting surface and make sure that you do not touch the roots. Make sure to gently rinse it. If possible, place the tooth back into the socket or in a glass of milk in order to prevent it from drying out. Depending on the length of time the tooth was out and how it was stored, an endodontist may be able to replace the tooth and stabilize it with a splint. After the splint has been in place for a period of time a root canal is needed.

A horizontal root fracture is less common and the healing success largely depends on where the fracture is located. The closer a fracture is to the tip of the root, the greater the chance of success is. Stabilization and medication may be required to begin the healing process followed by the eventual root canal to repair damaged pulp.

What Happens After Dental Restoration?

After your dental restoration procedure, your dental restoration specialist will give you a general list of what to do and not do to best maintain your teeth and keep your new smile bright. You’ll want to be sure to maintain consistent appointments and follow-ups with your dentist to ensure your restoration is maintained.

When it comes to aftercare, here are some things your dental restoration specialist may want you to keep in mind:

  • The shape and color of your permanent restoration may be different from your natural tooth/crown. This is normal.
  • The biting surface and flossing contact will be left open or out of occlusion. This is to aid the dentist in the crowning procedure and to speed up the healing process.
  • Be careful when eating or clenching your teeth. Excessive force can cause problems as only a properly crowned tooth can handle it.
  • If your tooth has been restored through the crown, your dentist will continue to monitor the integrity and seal of the crown over time.
